What it means to be Free
What it means to be Free
John 8:32-36
Luke 4:18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the
prisoners and recovery of sight of the blind, to release the oppressed,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
Jesus gives three lessons for Christian citizens to learn in relation to
freedom.
I. Freedom isn’t free.
A The price for spiritual freedom. Romans 6
B. We have been bought with a great price.
1. I Corinthians 6:20
2. Matthew 20:28
“Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
II. Independence means dependence.
A. We have become a nation independent of God.
B. We must be dependent on God to define for us real freedom.
1. Romans 8:1-2
2. II Corinthians 3:17
“Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”
3. Galatians 5:1
“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.”
III. Liberties are limited.
A. “For every ounce of freedom there must accompany that freedom
an ounce of responsibility.”
B. I Corinthians 8:9
“Take heed lest by any means, this liberty of yours become a
stumbling block to them that are weak.”
C. I Peter 2:16
“Live as free men, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil- live as servants of God.”
